Cambridge Bay: Where simplicity becomes beauty

Cambridge Bay is a small hamlet located in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut, Canada. Traditionally, Cambridge Bay was a hunting and fishing ground.

Overview of Cambridge Bay

Cambridge Bay is a transportation and administrative center for the western Kitikmeot Region. Inuinnaqtun is the traditional language spoken in this area and it is famous for arctic fishing. The population mostly consists of the Inuit and this place is a common stop for passenger and research vessels that are travelling across the Northwest Passage. During the 1920s, Cambridge Bay was the site of Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Hudson's Bay Company outposts. The hamlet is historically very significant, as it is home to many shipwrecks including the Baymaud captained by Ronald Amundsen.

Cambridge Bay Air Transportation

Cambridge bay is accessible by air transportation to its only airport that is the Cambridge Bay Airport (YCB), located at Nunavut and operated by the government of Nunavut. The most noticeable fact is that here runways are marked with real headings. That is because this place is quite close to the North Pole and the compass in the plane tend to go awry. Now, the price of the tickets might be higher than your expectations because of the far reach of this place and you could always look for cheap flights to Cambridge bay on the internet.

What to see in Cambridge Bay

Cambridge Bay is basically famous for its serene beauty and extremely natural way of living. It is a small peaceful hamlet after all. It can be even rated as a place where your body and soul can be one with nature and enjoy its bounties at full glory. Again, you can enjoy the wildlife out here and see the musk-Ox that thrives close to the community. If history is what fascinates you the most, then you could also go for shipwrecks. The Old Stone Church is quite a place, constructed in 1953 using seal oil and sand for mortar. The church is located in the original town site across the bay from the current town site. You could also check out the Loran tower and the splendid landscapes around the area. A visit to Mount Pelly is something that should not be missed out on.

When to visit Cambridge Bay

The summer is undoubtedly the best time to visit Cambridge bay, that is May to July. Otherwise this place receives a very cold polar weather and what you would mostly see in the winters is eerie, hazy and welcoming glow of this town. It is shrouded in ice fog during -35C night temperature. 19th may to 22nd June is the time for arctic phenomenon, midnight sun, when the sun practically remains on the horizon for 24 hrs provided the weather is not cloudy.

Cambridge Bay Nightlife

The nightlife is really disappointing in Cambridge Bay though, you should not be hoping for throbbing dance clubs at the night, as you shall get none of that here. But yes, alcohol can be imported by permit first obtained from the Nunavut Liquor Commission.
