The Maldives: not just for honeymooners

It’s little wonder that the Maldives is a dream destination for honeymooners to start their lives together; the secluded islands are far from the stress of the world back home, and offer some of the most pristine natural beauty and luxurious resorts in the world.

However, an increasing number of holidaymakers are discovering that this tropical archipelago is suitable for much more than just romantic breaks, as increasing numbers of families, single people and non-honeymooning couples choose to visit the islands.

In addition to the stereotypical image of romantic walks on a private beach, activities in the Maldives can include anything from sailing to scuba diving and surfing, but of course, the Maldives are not just for honeymooners.

Boating is one of the most popular activities in the Maldives; the daring can traverse open sea between islands on a rented sailboat, couples can paddle the clear waters in tandem kayaks as fish swim in bright corals below, and less adventurous souls or families can take a chartered tour. Tours usually include a range of activities like visits to uninhabited islands, villages, and resorts.

The Maldives has plenty to offer its scuba divers as well, like sunken shipwrecks and rare tropical fish. As with sailing, the Maldives also presents less experienced divers with plenty of options to explore the deep seas; scuba-diving schools offer guided dives and lessons to travellers interested in the region’s delicate and threatened ecosystem. Night-time diving is a particular treat, as some species of fish only come out in the dark, and the experience isn’t easily forgotten.

The Maldives is also a legendary destination for surfers, with a huge variety of conditions. The Gaafu Dhaalu or Huvadhoo Atoll is one of the best spots in the chain, with swell from all directions and no shortage of beautiful barrelling waves – so you won’t have to share the break with dozens of other surfers chasing the perfect rip curl. If your friends or family don’t surf, however, don’t leave them at home – they can swim, kayak or chill on the beach while you hang ten.

After a long day of sailing, diving, surfing or simply lying in the sun, a bit of yoga or massage at the resort will remind you why the Maldives is one of the most attractive destinations in the world – regardless of whether you just are honeymooners or not.
