Oklahoma City is also called “The Big Friendly”. This nickname is a guarantee that every visitor will spend a good time in the city. As an act of friendliness OKC (a short form of Oklahoma City) has sister cities from around the world, including China, Russia, Taiwan, Brazil and Mexico.
Like many cities in the south side of the US, Oklahoma City has a sub-humid climate. This could mean a disappointment for the skiers, but it also means that if you are looking for a winter holiday spot, with a mild winter your search is over. The average summer temperature is around 27 °C and winters are roughly 15 °C or colder.
Several venues serve as home for the numerous cultural attractions the city has, let that be a museum, theater or other performing art. The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is located in the Donald W. Reynolds Visual Art Center situated in the downtown area of the city. This museum offers a unique way of relaxation: showing permanent exhibitions as well as visiting ones from around the world. It also has a theater where you can watch the less known art films, classical movies and independent productions. A restaurant is also operating inside this center.
Another popular venue in the city is the Civic Center Music Hall. Here you can enjoy performances by traveling Broadway shows, ballet and opera artists and various concerts. For those who would like to watch a theater piece the Stage Center for the Performing Arts is the right place to be. This is the home of several well-known theater companies from the city. Many other smaller theaters also are open to public like Lyric Theater, Jewel Box Theater or Kirkpatrick Auditorium, as well as the recently opened Wanda L. Bass School of Music and Auditorium.
The city is also the home of one of the largest live music venues in the world. This is the Ford Center. Beside theaters in OKC, you can also find several museums, like Omniplex Science Museum. This museum is the home of an IMAX Theater. Like other major cities in the US, Oklahoma City has its own Image Maximum Theater, where the shows and movies are projected from a special high-resolution film. Only 280 IMAX theaters were operating in the world in 2006.
You can also find two museums that were raised to keep the western heritages alive or to honor the victims of the 1995 bombing. These are the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and the Oklahoma City National Memorial.
In the Myriad Botanical Garden, you can find the best known landmark of the city, the Crystal Bridge, which is a tropical conservatory. Tens of thousand visit this beautifully arranged park every year. The city’s zoo has an amphitheater where numerous concerts are held every summer. Concerts are also held in the Frontier City amusement park. The visitors of this park can also walk on the western themed main street and enjoy shows that are held here, including a recreation of gunfight. Souvenirs are sold in the western style shops.
The trails and parks around the Lake Hefner and Lake Overholser are perfect places for walking or cycling.
If the sun sets, the city shows its other face and becomes a perfect place to party. The large number of bar, clubs and lounges gives you the chance to spend your nights with you friend and meet new people. Several areas are real hotspots such as the Bricktown District. Here you can find a microbrewery. In this multilevel building, you can eat in the restaurant area, play pool or dance to live music. In this district, you can also find an ultra lounge, the Skky Bar. This is an upscale lounge offering all a selection of the finest champagnes and martinis. A VIP limousine can also be rented for the night including a VIP section in the lounge itself.
Not the Skky is the only upscale club in this district. The Spyce is advertising itself not being a simple nightclub, but rather an experience. With ladies free nights and luxuriously arranged VIP areas this club is very popular. If you find these too crowded you can visit one of the other dozens of clubs you can find in the city. You will surely spend a great time in 333, Aloha Tavern, Cat Ballou, The Blue Door and Enzone Sports Bar & Pub just to name a few.
No matter if you are looking for refined relaxation like museums or theaters or want to party at a live concert Oklahoma City offers both.
