With recession boredom setting in, we’re all in need of a holiday that doesn’t break the bank; of all the years we’ve needed cheap holidays 2011 has to be the year they’re needed the most.

Once upon a time, of course, you could pick up fantastically cheap last minute deals from any high-street travel agent, but times have changed. The best way to get more of a holiday for your money now is to book well in advance and to do it online.

The reason for this is the fact that most low-cost airlines operate a sliding pricing policy, with the cheap seats being sold first. Therefore, the earlier you can book your flight, the cheaper the fare is likely to be.

Accommodation wise, there are still some good last minute deals to be had but to get the best choice it’s still a case of the early bird catches the worm.

Those who want to keep costs low may have to forget the long-haul holidays this year and look at destinations closer to home instead. Luckily, being part of Europe, we have many fantastic summer holiday destinations practically on our doorstep.

Only two hours away is sunny Spain with its wealth of sun-soaked holiday hot-spots including the Costa Blanca, Costa Brava and Costa del Sol, as well as the popular Spanish islands. Here are some of the possible highlights of sunny Spain holidays:

Barcelona

The beautiful Catalonian capital Barcelona is a city full of vibrancy and fun. From the spectacular architecture of Antoni Gaudi that peppers the city like a sprinkling of sparkling multi-coloured sequins, to the gorgeously bright blooms piled high on the flower stalls of Las Ramblas, Barcelona is a riot of glorious colour.

The perfect merge of cosmopolitan city and laid-back beach destination, there’s no other place quite like Barcelona in the whole of Spain.

Marbella

For glitz and glam worthy of an A-list celebrity, there’s no better place to head in Spain than Marbella. Centred around the immaculate Puerto Banus harbour and the gleaming boats that moor there, a holiday in Marbella is a people watcher’s dream.

Though a favoured haunt of the rich and famous, there’s nothing to stop you from holidaying in Marbella on the cheap. Enjoy watching the IT crowd from behind your giant sunglasses and no-one need ever guess that you’re on a budget break.

Ibiza

Despite its reputation as the ultimate party town, Ibiza has something to offer everyone. Cala Longa is a quiet sandy bay popular with families, whereas San Jose is great for couples and groups who want to avoid the craziness of San Antonio.

Of course, many people head to Ibiza for what it does best: the party scene. In that case, you’ll be in your element in San Antonio where you’ll find some of the world’s biggest and best clubs.

Tenerife

Enjoying year-round sunshine, the island of Tenerife is a fantastic destination at all times. Dominated by the volcanic crater of the third tallest volcano in the world, Mount Tiede, Tenerife is more than just a beach destination.

The island is considered to be so naturally spectacular that almost half of it is under some form of natural protection and hikers and explorers will find themselves in their element in Tenerife.

Those who don’t fancy Spain could go a touch further afield and enjoy Greece holidays. From Corfu to Crete and Kos to Kefalonia, the opportunities for sun seekers are endless.

Only four hours from the UK, Greece is an easy flight away and has something to offer every holidaymaker.

With such a wealth of fantastic sun-soaked destinations within easy reach, there’s no reason why British holidaymakers can’t get a dose of sunshine on the cheap this summer.
